Canada Approves Four More English Tests for SDS Students

The Canadian government has recently approved four new English language tests, expanding the options available for language proficiency evaluation. Effective from August 10, 2023, these additional tests provide greater flexibility and accessibility for applicants.

The New Options for English Language Proficiency Evaluation

The newly approved English language tests include the CELPIP General, CAEL, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT Test.

These assessments aim to evaluate applicants’ abilities in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, providing a comprehensive assessment of their English language proficiency.

Individual Test Criteria

Each of the four tests has its own set of eligibility criteria, ensuring that applicants meet specific language proficiency standards.

  • For the CELPIP General tests, a minimum score equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark 7 in each of the four language speaking abilities is required.
  • For the CAEL tests, a minimum score of 60 is required.
  • For the Pearson PTE Academic tests, the same minimum score of 60 is required.
  • For the TOEFL iBT tests, applicants need to achieve a minimum score of 83.

These additional tests are in addition to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which has long been recognized as a benchmark for English language proficiency in Canadian academic institutions. The inclusion of these new tests expands the range of options available to international students, providing more flexibility in meeting the language requirements.

Who is Eligible?

These newly approved English language tests are specifically designed for students from countries participating in the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program.

Launched in 2018, the SDS program offers streamlined visa processing for students from select countries, ensuring a smoother and more efficient application process. Countries currently part of the SDS program include Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam.
